AN EFFECTIVE DATE. Staff Summary: Approximately eight weeks ago, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that resulted in the death of several thousand people struck Haiti. Two years ago during the
hurricane season, Haiti was hit with four deadly storms. Located 710 miles from South Florida, this small country in the Caribbean is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Prior
to the natural disasters that have hit the country, Haiti‘s per capita gross domestic product was forty percent lower than that of the next poorest country, Nicaragua. Stimulating the
economy by establishing programs that offer long‐term commitments would benefit the people of Haiti. The costs to produce and manufacture goods in the country would be cheaper, but still

will not only raise the state of the economy, but also their standard of living. Proposed Action: Mayor Shirley Gibson is requesting that City Council urge the United States Congress
to adopt economic development legislation to assist Haiti in rebuilding, by creating a program that includes long‐term commitments to purchase products from Haiti. Attachment: None
