OF MIAMI GARDENS, AGREEING TO PARTNER WITH THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION/AMERICAN STROKE ASSOCIATION TO BRING “POWER IN THE PARK” TO THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS IN SPRING 2010; PROVIDING
FOR THE ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS; PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. Staff Summary: The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (“AHA/ASA”) is the largest volunteer‐based
health organization in the country dedicated to “Building Healthier Communities Free of Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke”. The AHA/ASA is committed to raising awareness of cardiovascular
disease and stroke in the African American community. Studies have revealed the following facts: • The prevalence of high blood pressure in African Americans is the highest in the world
• African Americans have almost twice the risk of first time strokes as compared to White Americans • African Americans have higher death rates from strokes as compared to White Americans
In light of these facts, Vice Mayor Oliver Gilbert III, is proposing that the City of Miami Gardens partner with AHA/ASA to host its annual Power in the Park event at Miami Gardens Community
Center. If the Community Center has not been completed, another City facility will be used. For the past two (2) years, the “Power in the Park” event has taken place in the Goulds community,
and some of the events have included, heart disease, ITEM J-5) CONSENT AGENDA RESOLUTION Power in the Park Program
1515 NW 167 Street, Building 5 Suite 200 Miami Gardens, Florida 33169 awareness prevention programs, educational health fair with free health screening, entertainment, kids’ zone, basketball
and football tournaments, and a sponsorship reception and award ceremony. As a part of this partnership the City of Miami Gardens would be asked to assist with the following: • Provide
in‐kind services with respect to the venue, police services, and park staff time • Assign a staff member to participate in the Power in the Park planning committee The estimated cost
to the City will be $7,000, which is proposed to be funded from the General Fund. Proposed Action: Vice Mayor Oliver Gilbert III recommends that the City County adopt the attached resolution
supporting the partnership with The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association to host the Power in the Park event for an estimated cost of $7,000. Attachment: None
