A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING THE RENAMING
OF NW 17TH AVENUE, FROM NW 183RD STREET TO NW
188TH STREET AS “ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA WAY”;
AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO CHANGE THE
STREET SIGNAGE; PROVIDING FOR THE ADOPTION OF
REPRESENTATIONS; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, Councilman Reggie Leon, wishes to rename NW 17th Avenue from
183rd Street to 188th Street as “Alpha Kappa Alpha Way” in recognition of Alpha Kappa
Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is the first Greek-lettered
organization established by African American college-educated women founded January
15, 1908 on the campus of Howard University, and
WHEREAS, the impact of Alpha Kappa Alpha extends far beyond its membership.
Historically, its members have been at the forefront of movements for education, voter’s
rights, affordable housing, equality, and policy reform, and
WHEREAS, through its initiatives, Alpha Kappa Alpha has addressed the unique
needs of the community including the residents of the City of Miami Gardens. From
empowering families, building economic wealth, enhancing the environment and
advocating for social justice to uplifting the community, the sorority's dedication to service
has translated into many tangible benefits for residents, and
WHEREAS, Section 34-233 of the City of Miami Gardens Code of Ordinance
outlines the process for renaming and co-designating streets, and
WHEREAS, Section 44-233(b)(10) provides guidance for the Mayor and members
of the City Council to sponsor a Resolution for the renaming or co designation of a street,
and
WHEREAS, in recognition of its well documented, longstanding strive for
excellence and being of “Service to All Mankind” as outlined in the basic tenets of its
purpose, Councilman Leon recommends the City Council rename NW 17th Avenue from
NW 183rd Street to NW 188th Street, as “Alpha Kappa Alpha Way” and further directs
the City Manager to take all steps necessary to change the street signage for this purpose,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA AS FOLLOWS:

Section 1: ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS: The foregoing Whereas
paragraphs are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true, and the same are hereby
made a specific part of this Resolution.
Section 2: AUTHORIZATION: The City Council of the City of Miami Gardens
hereby authorizes the renaming of NW 17th Avenue, from NW 183rd Street to NW 188th
Street as “Alpha Kappa Alpha Way.” The City Council further authorizes the City Manager
to change the street signage.
Section 3: EFFECTIVE DATE: This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon
its final passage.

AT ITS REGULAR MEETING HELD ON MAY 22, 2024.
