HomeMy WebLinkAbout2024-120-2194_-_Mekhi_Hoosein_Quiles_Scholarship_-_Pending.docxRESOLUTION NO. 2024-120-2194 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA, ALLOCATING FUNDS FROM COUNCILWOMAN LINDA JULIEN'S COMMUNITY BENEFIT ACCOUNT IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS ($5,000.00) FOR A SCHOLARSHIP HONORING THE LATE MEKHI HOOSEIN QUILES; PROVIDING FOR ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, Mekhi Quiles was a beloved son, brother, friend, and dedicated participant in the Workforce Readiness Advancement & Placement (W.R.A.P.) Around Us Miami Gardens Program who tragically passed away on July 2nd, 2024, and WHEREAS, Mekhi was a talented artist, avid reader, and intellectual who had been accepted to St. Thomas University to pursue studies in the hospitality industry, and WHEREAS, Councilwoman Linda Julien seeks to honor Mekhi Hoosein Quiles’ memory by supporting future students who share his passion for the hospitality industry and dedication to education with a scholarship, and WHEREAS, Councilwoman Linda Julien would like to allocate funds from Seat 5’s Community Benefit Account (001-12-03-512-492-04) to establish a scholarship in Mekhi Hoosein Quiles' honor, supporting two students enrolled in St. Thomas University’s Hospitality Program, and WHEREAS, that this scholarship will be awarded to a deserving student who exemplifies the qualities of dedication, kindness, and academic aspirations that Mekhi Hoosein Quiles represented, and WHEREAS, the beneficiaries of this scholarship must be enrolled in Saint Thomas University’s Hospitality Program by September 30, 2024, and WHEREAS, St. Thomas University is required to provide the full name, address, phone number, and enrollment status of the recipient of the scholarship, and WHEREAS, Councilwoman Linda Julien will work in partnership with St. Thomas University to ensure that the scholarship is managed effectively and awarded to a student in need who meets the scholarship criteria, and WHEREAS, Councilwoman Linda Julien proposes an allocation of five thousand dollars ($5,000.00) from her Seat 5 Community Benefit Account (116-19-01-519-492-05) to support the Mekhi Hoosein Quiles Memorial Scholarship, and Docusign Envelope ID: 5A63DE2A-1FFC-4327-9154-3CB381EA635C Page 2 of 3 Resolution No. 2024-120-2194 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA AS FOLLOWS: Section 1: ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS: The foregoing Whereas paragraphs are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true, and the same are hereby made a specific part of this Resolution. Section 2: AUTHORIZATION: The City Council of the City of Miami Gardens hereby supports allocation of funds from Councilwoman Julien’s Community Benefit Account (116-19-01-519-492-05) in the amount of five thousand dollars ($5,000.00) for the Mekhi Hoosein Quiles Scholarship. Section 3: EFFECTIVE DATE: This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon its final passage.
