A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING THE RENAMING
OF NW 191st STREET, FROM NW 29th AVENUE TO NW 32nd
AVENUE AS “PHI BETA SIGMA WAY”; AUTHORIZING THE CITY
MANAGER TO CHANGE THE STREET SIGNAGE; PROVIDING
FOR THE ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS; PROVIDING
FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. was founded on January 9th, 1914
and operates under the motto "Culture for service, and service for humanity," and
WHEREAS, their core values of brotherhood, scholarship, and service resonate
with the City of Miami Gardens' dedication to building a more vibrant and stronger
community, and
WHEREAS, the Rho Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., established
in 1927, is the oldest Black Greek organization in South Florida. Rho Sigma founded the
Beta Pi Chapter at Florida Memorial College, now Florida Memorial University, in 1947,
and
WHEREAS, renaming the street to "Phi Beta Sigma Way" would be a testament
to the Fraternity’s long-standing legacy of service and commitment to the Miami Gardens
community, and
WHEREAS, it would serve as an inspiration for future generations and a reminder
of our shared responsibility to build a stronger, more inclusive Miami Gardens, and
WHEREAS, Section 34-233 of the City of Miami Gardens Code of Ordinance
outlines the process for renaming and co-designating streets, and
WHEREAS, Section 44-233(b)(10) provides guidance for the Mayor and members
of the City Council to sponsor a Resolution for the renaming or co-designation of a street,
and
WHEREAS, Councilman Leon seeks to honor the Fraternity’s rich history and
strong legacy by officially recognizing and dedicating NW 191st Street, from NW 29th
Avenue to NW 32nd Avenue, as “Phi Beta Sigma Way” and directing the City Manager to
take all steps necessary to change the street signage for this purpose,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA AS FOLLOWS:

Section 1: ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS: The foregoing Whereas
paragraphs are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true, and the same are hereby
made a specific part of this Resolution.
Section 2: AUTHORIZATION: The City Council of the City of Miami Gardens
hereby authorizes the renaming of NW 191st Street, from NW 29th Avenue to NW 32nd
Avenue, as “Phi Beta Sigma Way”. The City Council authorizes the City Manager to
change the street signage.
Section 3: EFFECTIVE DATE: This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon
its final passage.
PASSED AND ADOPTED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS
AT ITS REGULAR MEETING HELD ON OCTOBER 23, 2024.
