A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING THE RENAMING
OF NW 207TH STREET, FROM NW 33RD AVENUE TO NW
37TH AVENUE, AS “IOTA PHI THETA WAY”; AUTHORIZING
THE CITY MANAGER TO CHANGE THE STREET SIGNAGE;
PROVIDING FOR THE ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS;
PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. was founded on September 19, 1963,
at Morgan State College (now known as Morgan State University), and
WHEREAS, through the adversity of the civil rights movement, the faternity’s
twelve founders would create the fifth largest predominately African American social
service fraternity with the motto of "Building a Tradition, Not Resting Upon One", and
WHEREAS, Iota Phi Theta’s founders would also create the purpose of the
fraternity, "The development and perpetuation of Scholarship, Leadership, Citizenship,
Fidelity, and Brotherhood among men, and
WHEREAS, Through national efforts, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. would
influence the birth of their beloved Fraternity on local South Florida college campuses:
Florida International University (Eta Sigma Chapter), Florida Memorial University (Zeta
Zeta Chapter), and the newly established colony at the University of Miami as of Fall
2024, and
WHEREAS, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity looks forward to continuing its national
programs supporting St. Jude's Children's Hospital cancer research for children, the
American Red Cross, the Ora Lee Smith Cancer Research Foundation, and Feeding
South Florida, to name a few in the Miami Gardens surrounding area, and
WHEREAS, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity continues to grow and strengthen, so will its
commitment to making meaningful contributions to society, with particular emphasis on
the African-American community, and
WHEREAS, Section 34-233 of the City of Miami Gardens Code of Ordinance
outlines the process for renaming and co-designing streets, and
WHEREAS, Section 33-233(b)(10) provides guidance for the Mayor and members
of the City Council to sponsor a Resolution for the renaming or co-designation of a street,
and
WHEREAS, Councilman Leon seeks to honor the Fraternity's strong legacy by
officially recognizing and dedicating NW 207th Street, from 33rd Avenue to NW 37th

Avenue, as "Iota Phi Theta Way" and directing the City Manager to take all steps
necessary to change the street signage for this purpose.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1: ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS: The foregoing Whereas
paragraphs are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true, and the same are hereby
made a specific part of this Resolution.
Section 2: AUTHORIZATION: The City Council of the City of Miami Gardens
hereby authorizes the renaming of NW 207th Street, from 33rd Avenue to NW 37th
Avenue, as "Iota Phi Theta Way". The City Council authorizes the City Manager to change
the street signage.
Section 3: EFFECTIVE DATE: This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon
its final passage.
PASSED AND ADOPTED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS
AT ITS REGULAR MEETING HELD ON DECEMBER 11, 2024.
