Staff Summary: The Miami Gardens Police Department has appl ied for and been awarded grant funding from the United States Department of Justice COPS Program in t he amount of $1,250,000. These funds are to be used in furt herance of the implementation of the Department’s Violence Reduction Program targeting gang activity and vi olent crimes. The funding will reimburse 49% of ITEM K-5) CONSENT AGENDA RESOLUTION COPS Grant
1515 NW 167 Street, Building 5 Suite 200 Miami Gardens, Florida 33169 the salaries of ten entry level police officers for a period of three years, with a provision that the officers remain employed for an additional year with all costs absorbed by the City. The grant does require that “grantees are required to hire a new police officer who is a military veteran that has served after 9/11 for a period of no less than 180 days and has been honorably discharged.” This grant process was extremel y competitive as only 221 agencie s out of 1,411 nationwide and 7 out of 32 agencies in Florida were awarded funding. Additio nally, the Department received the highest number of officers ava ilable under the funding process formula which is critical to the success of the projec t being implemented. The funds from this grant awar d will significantly assist the Department in its endeavor to continue to reduce violent crime and introduc e a prevention component to our community policing efforts through Gang Resistance Education. Fundin g from the general fund for equipment, vehicles and uniforms has been allocated by the City Manager in furtherance of this project. It is anticipated that the new employees will be hired on October 1, 2012. Attempts to recruit and hire five positions as Police Cadet Recrui ts will be made, with preference given to City residence who meets the veteran requirement.
