Staff Summary: Located in the City of Miami Gardens, Sun Life Stadium is home of the National Football League’s (NFL) Miami Dolphins, and the University of Miami Hurricane football team. Sun Life Stadium has hosted 5 Super Bowls, 4 BCS Nati onal Championships, 2 World Series, and a plethora of noteworthy concerts, community and entertainment events. 1515 NW 167 Street, Building 5 Suite 200 Miami Gardens, Florida 33169 to the creation of thousands of j obs, and the generation of billions of dollars of economic activity in South Florida. Sun Life Stadium is one of the oldest NFL stadiums, and is need of significant modernization to compete with other state of th e art venues to host future wo rld class events. The Miami Dolphins franchise has unveiled plans to renovat e the aging, Sun Life Stadium. The franchise has pledged to cover half of the renovation costs, and desires to utilize public dollars to fund the remainder of the project. As such, Mayor Oliver Gilbert recommends the adoption of a Resolution to urge the Florida Leg islature to levy an additional pen ny on the Professional Sports Franchise Facility Tax, also known as the “tourist bed tax”. The tourist bed tax is already authorized by State Statute and has been utilized to fund the construction of other sports facilities, including the Amer ican Airlines Arena and the Homestead-Miami Speedway. It is estimated that the South Florid a region will benefit from the creation of 3,70 0 construction jobs, 1,100 permanent jobs, and an approx imate overall economic benefit in the amount of Two Billion Dollars if Sun Li fe Stadium is renovated.
