Staff Summary: Background The City of Miami Gardens continues to be proactive in seeking ways to improve various operations, services and programs through meetings and surveys with its businesses and residents. The Brothers of the Rho Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. took notice of that and realized a need to engage the voice of the City’s youth on ways to improve operations, service and programs in Miami Gardens.
1515 NW 167 Street, Building 5 Suite 200 Miami Gardens, Florida 33169 They also noticed the need to educate the youth about government operations. The idea was proferred that an effective way of giving youth this exposure would be to allow them to shadow the Mayor of Miami Gardens for a day. This would be a great way to learn firsthand about what it takes to run a City. Current Situation The goal of this program is to allow the youth of the City of Miami Gardens to have a voice in their community and to allow them to provide ideas which may result in positive change for the City. The key partnerships needed in the Mayor for a day program will be comprised of the following entities: Norland Senior High School Miami Carol City Senior High School City of Miami Gardens Junior Council Rho Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. The specifics of this proposed program are as follows: Currnent Seniors at each of the participating high schools will have an essay contest. Participants will write a 500 – 700 word essay entitled “2 ideas that I would implement to make the City of Miami Gardens an even better place to live .” The Miami Gardens Junior Council will receive the essays, review them, and select a first, second and third place winner. (All essays will remain the property of the City of Miami Gardens). The Brothers of the Rho Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity will sponsor a celebratory lunch for the winners and seek to provide other awards at the conclusion of the program. The program is set to begin in February and represents no fiscal impact to the City’s operation. It is anticipated that this program can be duplicated each year and that greater, positive engagement from the City’s youth will ensue. The attached resolution seeks the City Council’s approval of this program. Proposed Action: That the City Council approve the resolution. Attachment:
