FERGUSON COMMUNITY CENTER; PROVIDING FOR THE ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. Staff Summary: Background Quality of life issues and the safety of our children and residents are great concerns for me. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), drowning is a leading cause of injury death for young children ITEM K-2) CONSENT AGENDA RESOLUTION Water Safety Month
1515 NW 167 Street, Building 5 Suite 200 Miami Gardens, Florida 33169 ages 1 to 4, and the fifth leading cause of unintentional injury death for people of all ages. Every day, about ten people die from unintentional drowning; of these, two will be children aged 14 or younger. Drowning is the sixth leading cause of unintentional injury death for people of all ages, and the second leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 14 years. Current Situation May is National Water Safety Month. Last year our Parks and Recreation Department took part in this National Observance on a small scale. On May 11 th I propose that the City of Miami Gardens celebrate National Water Safety Month by offering fun opportunities to the community to learn more about how to stay safe in and around the water in preparation for the Spring and Summer seasons. This will be a joint effort with intended partners, such as: Miami ‐Dade’s Drowning Prevention Coalition; Miami Children’s Hospital/Safe Kids Program; Swim For Life Foundation; Safer Water Foundation; Miami ‐Dade County Fire ‐Rescue; Miami Gardens Police Department; Just Swim, Inc.; as well as other private community partners, will serve as an opportunity to educate the public about available resources to assist in keeping water safety a priority and injuries at a minimum. Target audiences will include, but not be limited to, local churches and optimist clubs that serve and are responsible for many children during the summer months. While we cannot make everyone 100% safe, we can do our best to educate and make everyone SAFER, in and around water. All events will be open and free to the public, with lots of fun water safety items being provided to the participants at not cost. Proposed Action: That the City Council approves this resolution directing the City Manager to make available the indoor swimming pool and amphitheater at the Betty T Ferguson Recreational Complex and take all necessary actions to ensure the success of this event.
