A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA,
RECOGNIZING SEPTEMBER 27, 2014 AS FAMILY DAY IN THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS;
PROVIDING FOR THE ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE
DATE.
Staff Summary:
President Barack Obama issued a Proclamation, proclaiming September 27th as “Family Day” in the
United States. Originally launched in 2001, Family Day is a national movement to celebrate parental
encouragement as an effective tool to keep America’s kids substance free.
Councilman Ighodaro agrees with the concept of committed families shaping and guiding our children,
preparing them for every obstacle they may encounter and encouraging them to overcome life’s most
demanding challenges. Today, our young people are exposed to negative influences that can lead to

dangerous decisions, such as abusing drugs and alcohol. When parents, loved ones and mentors take
the time to educate youth about the risks they face, they can change attitudes and reduce the likelihood
that their loved ones will use alcohol and illicit drugs.
Simple things such as sharing a meal, a conversation, or a book can have an enormous impact on the life
of a child. Strong and engaged families help build a strong community. Councilman Ighodaro believes it
is our responsibility as concerned family members to discuss the dangers of substance abuse.
This Resolution recognizes September 27, 2014, as Family Day, which honors the devotion of parents
and family members, and encourages their critical role in teaching our young people positive and
healthy behaviors. Families are encouraged to observe this day by spending time with their families, and
by engaging in appropriate ceremonies and activities that honor and strengthen their family.
Proposed Action:
Councilwoman Ighodaro proposes that the City Council approve this resolution.
