Staff Summary:  Vice Mayor Lisa C. Davis sponsored and the Council approved Resolution No. 2012‐186‐1781, which  expressed support to the Florida Legislature in its efforts to eliminate human trafficking.      Councilman Ighodaro deems it appropriate to expound on this subject matter by supporting the efforts  of “Miamians Against Human Trafficking 2014 SomeonesChild Program.”    The “SomeonesChild” Program was created to prevent the commercial and sexual exploitation of  children and young women worldwide through empowerment, community outreach, training and  ITEM K-4) CONSENT AGENDA RESOLUTION Someone's Child Program   18605 NW 27th Avenue    Miami Gardens, Florida 33056    collaborative approaches by partnering with professional organizations on a global level.  This  organization exist to provide resources to victims and to provide information and resources to educate  the public about the devastating realities of sex trafficking and how to identify victims of forced labor or  sexual exploitation.    Facts: over 2.2 million children are sold into the slave trade every year which includes:  runaway and  homeless youth; children kidnapped from shopping centers, airports, malls, playgrounds, theme parks  and streets in their neighborhoods.    Many people believe that human trafficking is not a domestic or local problem but an international  problem.  Human trafficking is an “invisible crime” because it is not always visible to the untrained eye.   Miamians must learn the signs of human trafficking because the city attracts travelers from around the  world.  “We have a booming tourism industry.  We have a very active transient male population here,  where guys come and go,” said Wilfredo Ferrer, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Florida.  “If  they are here for sporting events, for example, a lot of these victims are used, so to speak, to service  them.”    Proposed Action:    Councilwoman Ighodaro proposes that the City Council approve this resolution.    Attachment:
