A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING SUICIDE
PREVENTION AND MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS;
PROVIDING FOR THE ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS;
PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
Staff Summary:
According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, suicide claims 39,500
lives each year. It is estimated that a suicide attempt is made every minute, with close
to one million people attempting suicide annually. Overall, suicide is the tenth leading
cause of death in the country. Ninety percent of people who die by suicide have a
potentially treatable mental disorder at the time of their death. A study conducted by the
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration revealed that alcohol and
drug abuse are second, only to depression and other mood disorders, when it comes to

risk factors for suicide. National Suicide Prevention Week is observed each year during
the month of September, and National Mental Health Awareness month is observed
every May. Councilwoman Lisa Davis recommends that the City support suicide
prevention and mental health awareness. During fiscal year 2015, Councilwoman Davis
is planning to host a community walk, and other events to raise awareness to
encourage suicide prevention.
Proposed Action:
It is recommended that the City Council approve this Resoultion.
