A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA, RECOGNIZING NOVEMBER AS
NATIONAL DIABETES PREVENTION MONTH IN THE CITY OF
MIAMI GARDENS; AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO
TAKE ANY AND ALL STEPS NECESSARY TO IMPLEMENT THE
SIXTH ANNUAL DIABETES PREVENTION EVENT; PROVIDING
FOR THE ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS; PROVIDING
FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, Councllwoman Lisa C. Davis is hosting the Sixth Annual National
Diabetes Prevention event, Sunday, November 5, 2017, at the Betty T. Ferguson
Recreational Complex, and
WHEREAS, last year more than 500 residents were in attendance along with
health care professionals as well as local chefs who were on hand to provide helpful
information about healthy lifestyles and healthy eating for Diabetes, and
WHEREAS, this event is again open and free to the public, and
WHEREAS, according to the American Diabetes Association there are nearly 26
million children and adults in America living with Diabetes, and
WHEREAS, furthermore, there is another 70 million at high risk for developing
Type 2 Diabetes, the disease taking devastating physical, emotional and financial toll on
our country, especially here in Miami Gardens, and
WHEREAS, recent numbers by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
paints a desperate situation of where we are at, and where we are headed: every 17
seconds, someone is diagnosed with Diabetes, this includes children; Diabetes kills
more people each year than Breast Cancer and AIDS combined; recent estimates
project that as many as 1 in 3 American adults will have Diabetes in 2050, unless we
take steps to Stop Diabetes, and
WHEREAS, Councilwoman Davis continues her efforts and goal of education
and brining added awareness to Miami Gardens' residents. As with last year's event it
is Councilwoman Davis' intent to totally fund this awareness program through
contributions and sponsorships, and
WHEREAS, however, if funding campaign is not success, a portion of the
program will be funded through a budgeted amount not to exceed $7,000 in FY 2018
Special Events account designated for each Council person under the Public Affairs
Budget, and
WHEREAS, Councilwoman Davis recommends the City Council recognizes
November as National Diabetes Prevention Month in the City of Miami Gardens and the
6'^ Annual Diabetes Prevention Event,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA AS FOLLOWS;
Section 1: ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS: The foregoing Whereas
paragraphs are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true, and the same are hereby
made a specific part of this Resolution.
Section 2: AUTHORIZATION: The City Council of the City of Miami Gardens
hereby recognizes November as National Diabetes Prevention Month in the City;
authorizing the City Manager to take any and all steps necessary to implement the Sixth
Annual Diabetes Prevention Event.
Section 3: EFFECTIVE DATE: This Resolution shall take effect immediately
upon its final passage.

Fiscal Impact
After the above allocation, no funding will be available for Councilwoman Davis under the Public Affairs
budget Special Events account.
Proposed Action:
Recommend Council approval of the resolution in support of Diabetes Awareness Month and the 6th Annual
Diabetes Event.
