A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA, RECOGNIZING OCTOBER AS
HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH IN THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS
PROVIDING FOR THE ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS;
PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, Vice Mayor Erhabor Ighodaro recognizes the invaluable
contributions made to this community by Hispanic Americans, and
WHEREAS, during National Hispanic Heritage Month community leaders
recognize the contributions made and the important presence of Hispanic and Latino
Americans to the United States and celebrate their heritage and culture, and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Gardens deems this national recognition especially
noteworthy because of its large percentage of Hispanic residents and employees, and
WHEREAS, Hispanics have had a profound and positive influence on our country
through their strong commitment to family, faith, hard work and service, and
WHEREAS, they have enhanced and shaped our national character with
centuries-old traditions that reflect the multiethnic and multicultural customs of their
community, and
WHEREAS, Hispanic Heritage Month whose roots go back to 1968, begins each
year on September 15, the anniversary of independence of five Latin American
countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, and
WHEREAS, Mexico, Chile and Belize also celebrate their independence days
during this period and Columbus Day (Dia de la Raza) is October 12"^, and
WHEREAS, the term Hispanic or Latino, refers to Puerto Rican, South or Central
American, or other Spanish cultures or origins regardless of race, and
WHEREAS, on the 2010 Census form, people of Spanish, Hispanic and /or
Latino origin could identify themselves as Mexican, and
WHEREAS, according to this Census, 50.5 million people or 16% of the
population are of Hispanic or Latino origin, and
WHEREAS, Vice Mayor Erhabor Ighodaro recommends the City Council
recognizes October as Hispanic Heritage Month,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1: ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS: The foregoing Whereas
paragraphs are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true, and the same are hereby
made a specific part of this Resolution.
Section 2: AUTHORIZATION: The City Council of the City of Miami Gardens
hereby recognizes October as Hispanic Heritage Month. That City Council approve the
resolution as a tribute, learning and celebrating the generations of Hispanic Americans,
as well as Miami Gardens' Hispanic residents and employees who have positively
influenced and enriched our nation, society and community
Section 3: EFFECTIVE DATE: This Resolution shall take effect immediately
upon its final passage.
