A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA, ACKNOWLEDGING THE
APPOINTMENT OF ELESHA SMITH-ALYN TO THE
EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION TEMPORARY AD HOC
ADVISORY COMMITTEE: PROVIDING FOR THE ADOPTION OF
REPRESENTATIONS; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Gardens and Miami-Dade County Public Schools
first adopted the Miami Gardens Education Compact on April 18, 2007, and
WHEREAS, the Excellence in Education Council Board is currently inactive, and
WHEREAS, on April 19, 2017, the City held a public workshop, and
WHEREAS, on July 26, 2017, Councilman Williams sponsored Resolution No.
2017-131-3236, which created the Excellence in Education Temporary Ad Hoc Advisory
Committee, with each Council Member and the Mayor appointing one (1) member for a
total of seven (7) members, and
WHEREAS, the primary responsibility of this temporary Excellence in Education
Ad Hoc Advisory Committee would be to advise the Council on reinstating the
Excellence in Council Board and bringing back recommendations to the Council as it
relates to the composition of the Board as well as to make recommendations on the
goals and objectives of the Board, and
WHEREAS, in accordance with Resolution No. 2017-131-3236, Vice Mayor
Erhabor Ighodaro hereby appoints Elesha Smith-Alyn to serve on the Excellence in
Education Temporary Ad Hoc Advisory Committee,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1: ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS: The foregoing Whereas
paragraphs are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true, and the same are hereby
made a specific part of this Resolution.
Section 2: ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: The City Council of the City of Miami
Gardens hereby acknowledges Vice Mayor Erhabor Ighodaro appointment of Elesha
Smith-Alyn to the Excellence in Education Temporary Ad Hoc Advisory Committee.
Section 3: EFFECTIVE DATE: This Resolution shall take effect immediately
upon its final passage.

Staff Summary:
BACKGROUND
The City of Miami Gardens and Miami-Dade County Public Schools first adopted the Miami
Gardens Education Compact on April 18, 2007. As a result of the collaboration the Excellence in
Education Board was created.
CURRENT SITUATION
The Excellence in Education Board is currently inactive. On April 19, 2017, Councilman David
Williams Jr., held a public workshop. During that workshop discussion, a determination was
made that it would be necessary and more effective for the Board members to be appointed by
Council.

On July 26, 2017, Councilman Williams sponsored Resolution No. 2017-131-3236, creating an
Excellence in Education Temporary Ad Hoc Advisory Committee, with each Council Member
and the Mayor appointing one (1) member for a total of seven (7) members. The primary
responsibility of this Excellence in Education Temporary Ad Hoc Committee is to advise the
Council on reinstating the Excellence in Education Board, and provide recommendations about
the composition of the Board’s goals and objectives.
In accordance with Resolution No. 2017-131-3236, Vice Mayor Erhabor Ighodaro hereby
appoint Elesha Smith-Alyn to serve on the Excellence in Education Temporary Ad Hoc Advisory
Committee.

Proposed Action:
Approve resolution acknowledging Vice Mayor Ighodaro’s appointment of Elesha Smith-Alyn to
the Excellence in Education Temporary Ad Hoc Advisory Committee.
