A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA, RECOGNIZING BLACK HISTORY
MONTH DURING THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY 2020;
PROVIDING FOR THE ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS;
PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, in the United States, National African American History Month is
celebrated annually in the month of February, and
WHEREAS, Dr. Carter G. Woodson, founder of the Association for the Study of
Negro Life and History, initiated "Negro History Week" in 1926, and
WHEREAS, Negro History Week grew into "Black History Month" in 1976 when
President Gerald Ford issued the first Message on the Observance of Black History
Month that year, and
WHEREAS, the City of Miami Gardens deems this national recognition
noteworthy because of its large percentage of residents and employees of African
descent, and
WHEREAS, Americans of African descent have made profound contributions and
achievements in Architecture, Arts, Business, Civil Rights, Economics, Education,
Entertainment, Exploration, History, Law, Literature, Medicine, Military, Music, Politics,
Science, and Sports, and
WHEREAS, the year 2020 marks the centennial of the Nineteenth Amendment
and the culmination of the women's suffrage movement, and the sesquicentennial of the
Fifteenth Amendment, which granted black men the franchise after the Civil War, and
WHEREAS, Councilman Erhabor Ighodaro recognizes that diversity and
education are tenets in creating equitable opportunities and outcomes, and is urging the
City Council to acknowledge and support February 2020 as Black History Month,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1: ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS: The foregoing Whereas
paragraphs are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true, and the same are hereby
made a specific part of this Resolution.
Section 2: EXPRESSION OF RECOGNITION: The City Council of the City of
Miami Gardens hereby recognizes February as Black History Month.
Section 3: EFFECTIVE DATE: This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon
its final passage.
