Resolution supporting the Florida Department of Elder Affairs' Communities
for a Lifetime Initiative.
Staff Summary
At the March 14, 2007, City Council Meeting, Ms. Janine Rogers-Harris,
Community Relations Coordinator, with the State of Florida, Communities
fora Lifetime appeared before the City Council to solicit support of
Communities for a Lifetime initiative. She asked the Council to adopt a
resolution and join the other 166 communities across the state of Florida
that decided to make improvements in their communities in housing,
transportation and employment.
Ms. Rogers-Harris informed the Council that the Department of Elderly
Affairs can provide technical assistance and resources (funding) for
housing, transportation and employment for the elderly.
Councilwoman Watson directed staff to prepare a resolution for the
Council's consideration at the April 11, 2007 meeting.
RESOLUTION No. 2007-
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI
GARDENS, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF
ELDER AFFAIRS' COMMUNITIES FOR A LIFETIME; PROVIDING FOR
INSTRUCTIONS TO THE CITY CLERK; PROVIDING FOR THE
ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS; PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE
DATE.
1 WHEREAS, the City of Miami Gardens supports the Florida Department of Elder
2 Affairs' Communities for a Lifetime initiative to make Florida a friendlier place to live for
3 people of all ages, so that they may be as independent as long as possible, and remain
4 in their homes and in the communities they love, and
5 WHEREAS, the State of Florida has the highest percentage of elders of any state
6 in the nation and our elder population will continue to increase, and
7 WHEREAS, in order to allow all residents to maintain their dignity, security and
8 independence, communities must evaluate, assess and modify their infrastructures to
9 create a Community for a Lifetime, and
10 WHEREAS, the City of Miami Gardens and the Florida Department of Elder
11 Affairs share the vision and responsibility to improve the life of all citizens so they can
12 prepare for and enjoy aging in place throughout their life, and
13 WHEREAS, in order to achieve our mutual goals, cities and counties should
14 begin to build together a place free of physical, emotional and social barriers,
15 NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
16 OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS:
17 Section 1. ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS: The foregoing Whereas
18 paragraphs are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true, and the same are hereby
19 made a specific part of this Resolution.
20 Section 2. EXPRESSION OF SUPPORT: The City Council of the City of
21 Miami Gardens hereby supports all efforts made by the Florida Department of Elder
22 Affairs' Communities fora Lifetime to remove barriers that prevent the elderly from
23 being able to remain as independent as long as possible, remain in their homes and in
24 the communities that they love.
25 Section 3. INSTRUCTIONS TO THE CITY CLERK: The City Clerk is hereby
26 directed to send a copy of this Resolution to the Florida Department of Community
27 Affairs.
28 Section 4. EFFECTIVE DATE: This Resolution shall take effect immediately
29 upon its final passage.
30 PASSED AND ADOPTED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI
31 GARDENS AT ITS REGULAR MEETING HELD ON APRIL 11, 2007.
