HomeMy WebLinkAboutL-1 Reports : Manager's ReportStaff Monthly Report Nov-Dec 2006 CITY MANAGER'S OFFICE • Sent budget to the printers • Began working on the City's required Self-Evaluation Plan for the Americans with Disabilities Act. • Prepared guidelines for non-profits funding under the CDBG program. • Interviewed the new Police Department Training Officer. • Met Weekly with the police department transition team. • Completed work on the 2 bonds for police equipment and property. • Teleconference with the Turnpike Authority regarding the land they intend to take at Rolling Oaks Park. • Prepared and began distributing a citizen's survey on the needs of the handicapped. PUBLIC WORKS (Tom Ruiz) 1. Staff continues to perForm asphalt street repairs and concrete sidewalk repairs and installation on- going citywide. 2. Staff continues to clean and maintain bus bench areas throughout the City. 3. Staff continues to mow public right-of-ways to ensure that the roadways are aesthetically pleasing. 4. Staff continues to trim and prune trees citywide. 5. Coordinate with KMGB to plant trees on NW 181 Terrace & NW 8th PL. 6. Contractor Sunshine Guardrail Company completed bridge fence/steel structure repairs on NW 42 Avenue and NW 178 Street. 7. Continue to coordinate with Vila & Son on the NW 27 Avenue Beautification Project (Completion: 60 %); Irrigation ( Pump Stations ); Ground Cover Plant Material Installation; Brick Pavers Installation 1 L-1) REPORTS CITY MANAGER'S REPORT 8. Public works processed 36 driveway and 4 utility permits. 9. H& J paved NW 7 Ave from 167 St to 183 St and NW 12 Ave from 170 Terrace to NW 167 Street. 10. Golden Glades/441 Landscape Project is 74% completed - 3rd invoice of $114,293 was processed: 11. Coordinating with Vila & Son on the NW 27th Ave Beautification Project. All the irrigation piping is approximately 80% completed. 50% of the trees have been planted. The concrete medians are being removed for the brick pavers. 12. H& J Asphalt - Invoice # 14 was processed. We will continue the Paving CIP beginning the week of November 27. (Remaining balance of the QNIP funds is $ 284,376) 13. Staff met with EDEN on the Permitting process in the system. Keep Miami Gardens Beautiful Florida Highway Beautification Grant • Applied for $300,000 to help landscape 183~d Street. • Will be notified by mid Jan. MEDIA AND SPECIAL EVENTS Coordinator (Ula Zucker) • Planning Jazz in the Gardens Jazz festival. • Sending out sponsorship packages for Jazz in the Gardens to potential sponsors. • Continued Follow up with potential sponsors for Jazz in the Gardens. • Attending Jazz in the Gardens marketing/production meetings. • Negotiating contract for website for Miss Miami Gardens Pageant • Working with consultant for Miss Miami Gardens Pageant to plan event and details surrounding event rules, regulations and procedures • Planned and produced Festival of Carols. Event date and time was Sunday December 17t", 2006 from 5pm-8pm. • Met with Wal-Mart to discuss upcoming events and sponsorship opportunities. • Planning and attending MLK Planning Committee meetings. Meetings have now moved to weekly. • Collaborating with all the MLK sub committees to identify needs and make sure all elements come together or the event. • Collaborated with Parks and Recreation to coordinate the Mike McKenzie food giveaway and toy drive. I particularly coordinated the press and toy drive for this event. We were able to get some good press opportunities. • Assisting with the police swearing-in ceremony to be held on January 16th, 2006 • Hired a new temp that is currently working with me as an admin. • Planning a"Welcome to Miami Gardens Host of Super Bowl 2007" for the Mayor. • Revised the County's Tourist Developmental Grant and submitted to county. Awaiting response and panel presentation opportunity. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (William Henderson) 4 I. Travel a. None II. Software Upgrades a. Microsoft i. Installed several security upgrades to the servers ii. Will be upgrading everyone to Internet Explorer 7.0 which offers tabbed browsing and enhanced security features b. Trach-IT i. We have installed a new help desk software solution to provide for automated trouble ticket generation from emails and web-based forms and will allow for more accurate inventory and asset management. ii. We intend to go-live with this software implementation around the end of January c. Laserfiche i. We have finalized on a document management system called Laserfiche that will integrate with EDEN and will allow us to accurately and efficiently store and manage documents and attachments III. Hardware Upgrades a. Siafu SWARM 3100 i. We have finalized a purchase agreement for a SAN that will provide the storage capacity for the document management system as well as provide storage for virtualization b. Fiber network to Cloverleaf i. We are in the final stages of a project to provide expanded bandwidth to our remote location at cloverleaf 1. this is in an effort to increase network performance and functionality at that location ii. Once purchase is finalized we will be looking at May for final implementation iii. This will provide increased speeds of at least 600% IV. EDEN 5 a. Completed revisions and transmitted to DCA upon adoption by City Council. To date, received favorable review by the South Florida Regional Planning Council that the City's Plan complies with the Regional Plan and other related State Plan policies. SFRPC formal review is set for January 8, 2007. Compliance determination by DCA set for January 24, 2007. 2. Award - Accepted an Award of Merit for Outstanding Master Planning from the Gold Coast Section of the Florida Chapter of the American Planning Association regaxding the City's innovative approach to Future Land Use Planning. MASTER PLANS - • Transit Circulator Feasibility Analysis. Held telephone conference kick-off with the consultants for this study, David Plummer Associates and Miami-Dade County MPO representatives. Interviews and trainings were held throughout the month. • The School Crossing Guard department hosted the City's 1 St Annual Holiday Party. • 9 new hires, 2 resignations, 2 terminations, total of 78 school crossing guards. PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT REPORT (Vernita Nelson) Recreation Division Brentwood Park ^ After-school program on-going (at capacity). ^ 32 senior's attending attend weekly meetings on Mondays. Buccaneer Park ^ After-school program on-going. ^ Seniors program has 68 participants registered. ^ There are 37 seniors active in line dancing on Thursday mornings. ^ Seniors attended a shopping trip and tour to south beach on November 27th. ^ Other happenings include: social leisure on Monday evenings, Walking Club on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, line dancing lessons every Thursday, and breakfast and current affairs on Friday mornings. Bunche Park ^ Seniors attended weekly programs on Fridays at 9:OOam. Attended a Christmas function at 1 S` Baptist Church in Broward. ^ After-school program on-going. ^ Teens are attending a cultural arts workshop at Lake Lucerne Park. Carol Park ^ After-school program on-going. ^ Recreation staff is promoting the teen program to enroll participants. ^ There is line dancing taking place in Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights, sponsored by the Carol City Optimist club. 15 Lake Lucerne Park ^ After-school program on-going. ^ The participants enrolled in the teen program have been receiving workshops, homework assistance, fieldtrips, and more. Miami Carol City Park ^ After-school program on-going. ^ Recreation staff is promoting the senior program to enroll participants. Myrtle Grove Park ^ After-school program on-going. ^ Teens are attending a cultural arts workshop at Lake Lucerne Park. Norwood Park ^ Host training site for the Marian Center softball league (for mentally challenged adults). Recreation staff led weekly training sessions. Dec. 6th was the last week. All participants received a trophy for completing the season. ^ After-school program on-going (at capacity). ^ Presently staff has enrolled 6(six) participants for their teen program; Four of the six teens are participating in the A.D.M.I.T. program, which is a program that teaches them about the music industry. In this program they will write a song, mix the music, and produce a song in the studio. This is a four week session. ^ A robbery occurred at the recreation building. Norwood Pool ^ The Norland High School swim team is currently practicing at the pool three times per week. Rolling Oaks Park ^ After-school program on-going (at capacity). ^ Thirty-five seniors in attendance at the weekly senior programs held on Thursdays at 10 am. Eighteen seniors attended a Christmas function at 1 St Baptist Church in Broward. Scott Park ^ Teens are participating in the A.D.M.I.T. program, which is a program that teaches them about the over all music industry. In this program they will write a song, mix the music, and produce a song in the studio. This is a four week session. ^ After-school program on-going. Vista Verde Park ^ Children from the neighborhood come to the park to complete their homework and play games. ^ Presently, the recreation staff is working to build the sports development programs. Athletics & Sports Development ^ T-Ball Program: The program ended on December 2"d. Overall, 32 boys and girls were registered and played at Norwood Park on Saturdays.
