Bratton Councilman Aaron Campbell Councilman Andr~ Williams Councilwoman Sharon Pritchett Councilwoman Barbara Watson From: Shirley Gibson Mayor Date: March 14, 2007 Re: RESOLUTION FORMING AN EDUCATION COMPACT WITH MIAMI-DADE COUNTY SCHOOLS (DISTRICTS) The attached resolution expresses intention to create an Education Compact between the City of Miami Gardens and Miami-Dade County Public Schools for the improvement of academic programs offered by the District; to foster greater community involvement, and to coordinate the City and the District's Infrastructure and administrative planning efforts. RECOMMENDATION: That the City Council approve the resolution. J-5) CONS~NT AGENI3A RE~OL~,~ p ION EDUC~'I'If~N I1~IPACT RESOLUTION No. 2007- A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS AUTHORIZING THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS TO FORM AN EDUCATION COMPACT WITH MIAMI-DADE COUNTY SCHOOLS ("DISTRICT") TO EDUCATE AND ENGAGE STAKEHOLDERS ON DISTRICT INITIATIVES AND ACTIVITIES AND TO PROMOTE MEANINGFUL RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE CITY, ITS RESIDENTS AND THE DISTRICT; PROVIDING FOR THE ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS; PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. 1 2 WHEREAS, in recognition of the fact that it takes the commitment of the Miami- Dade County Public Schools ("District") as well as the City of Miami Gardens ("City") 3 and it's residents in order to raise academic achievement in the City, and 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 WHEREAS, the District has suggested that an Education Compact between the City and the District be established in an effort to engage the City's residents in a process for achieving academic excellence, and WHEREAS, among other things the creation of an Education Compact will improve academic programs offered by the District, foster greater community involvement with the stakeholders in the process, and will ensure the coordination of the City and the District's infrastructure and administrative planning efforts, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA, as follows: Section 1. ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS: The foregoing Whereas paragraphs are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true, and the same are hereby made a specific part of this Resolution. 16 Section 2. AUTHORIZATION: The City Council of the City of Miami Gardens 17 hereby authorizes and expresses it's intention to create an Education Compact between 18 the City of Miami Gardens and Miami-Dade County Public Schools for the improvement 19 of academic programs offered by the District; to foster greater community involvement, 20 and to coordinate the City and the District's infrastructure and administrative planning 21 efforts. 22 Section 3. EFFECTIVE DATE: This Resolution shall take effect immediately 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 37 38 39 40 41 42 43 44 45 46 47 48 49 50 51 upon its final passage.
