A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA, ADOPTING A "MISSION
STATEMENT" AND "TAGLINE" FOR THE NEWLY ORGANIZED
MUNICIPAL POLICE DEPARTMENT; PROVIDING FOR THE
ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS; PROVIDING AN
EFFECTIVE DATE.
Summarv
During the July 25, 2007 City Council Meeting staff presented a draft Police
Department Mission Statement and Tagline for Council approval. During the
above-mentioned meeting Council made a motion adopting the mission
statement and tagline and directed staff to draft a resolution to formally adopt the
Police Department Mission statement and Tagline at the next regularly scheduled
Council Meeting.
As such, staff has prepared the resolution for Council consideration.
Recommendation:
City Council approve the resolution adopting a mission statement and tagline for
the Police Department.

RESOLUTION No. 2007 -
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI
GARDENS, FLORIDA, ADOPTING A"MISSION STATEMENT" AND
"TAGLINE" FOR THE NEWLY ORGANIZED MUNICIPAL POLICE
DEPARTMENT; PROVIDING FOR THE ADOPTION OF
REPRESENTATIONS; PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
1 WHEREAS, the City is organizing a professional municipal police department,
2 and
3 WHEREAS, it is essential to the success of such a department that it has the
4 support of a broad segment of the community, and
5 WHEREAS, a professional police department must appreciate and incorporate
6 the spirit of the municipality which it serves, and
7 WHEREAS, it is important to the success of any organization that it has a defined
8 mission, and
9 WHEREAS, it is, likewise, important to the success of an organization, such as a
10 professional municipal police department, that it find a way to quickly capture the
11 attention of the community in such a way that the community feels a part of the policing
12 effort, and
13 WHEREAS, Chief Matthew Boyd and his staff have worked closely with the
14 community to establish a base of understanding and trust, and
15 WHEREAS, Chief Matthew Boyd engaged the community in establishing a
16 community mission for the professional police department, and
17 WHEREAS, the police department and the community, working together,
18 developed a Mission Statement to incorporate professional concepts with the
19 community's expectations and aspirations, and
20 WHEREAS, at the regular City Council meeting of July 25, 2007, Chief Boyd
21 presented the City Council with the community-based Mission Statement and a
22 companion Tagline, and the City Council, upon motion duly made and adopted,
23 expressed its acceptance thereof,
24 NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
25 OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS:
26 Section 1. ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS: The foregoing Whereas
27 paragraphs are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true, and the same are hereby
28 made a specific part of this Resolution.
29 Section 2. ADOPTION OF MISSION STATEMENT: The following Mission
30 Statement is hereby adopted as the official Mission Statement of the City of Miami
31 Gardens' professional police department:
32 The Miami Gardens Police Department is committed to building a better
33 tomorrow through community interaction. This will be accomplished
34 through mutual trust and cooperation with those "We Serve". We are
35 committed to providing ethical, quality and responsive service to the
36 community with professionalism, pride and trust. This trust will be
37 established by providing service which will be fair but firm, and by
38 protecting our citizens with consistent commitment which will be
39 unyielding.

41 Section 3. ADOPTION OF TAGLINE: The following is hereby adopted as the
42 "Tagline" suitable for display on appropriate City equipment, as representative of the
43 distillation of the official Mission Statement of the professional police department of the
44 City of Miami Gardens:
45 "Building a Safer Tomorrow"
46 Section 4. EFFECTIVE DATE: This Resolution shall take effect immediately
47 upon its final passage.
