A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA, RECOGNIZING JUNE 19TH AS A
HOLIDAY IN THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS; AND URGING
THE STATE AND FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO RECOGNIZE
JUNETEENTH AS AN OFFICIAL HOLIDAY; PROVIDING FOR
THE ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS; PROVIDING FOR
AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, June 19th is recognized as Juneteenth, the day that commemorates
the end of slavery in the United States, and
WHEREAS, Juneteenth, has long been an important holiday in the African
American community, as a time for celebration rather than mourning and remembrance,
and
WHEREAS, as the largest Black city in the state of Florida, Miami Gardens will
officially designate June 19th as a holiday in the City, and
WHEREAS, City offices will be closed, and
WHEREAS, the City will also urge the State and Federal Government to
recognize Juneteenth as an official holiday,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1 : ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS: The foregoing Whereas
paragraphs are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true, and the same are hereby
made a specific part of this Resolution.
Section 2: AUTHORIZATION: The City Council of the City of Miami Gardens
hereby recognizes June 19th as a holiday in the City of Miami Gardens.
Section 3: EXPRESSION OF SUPPORT: The City Council of the City of Miami
Gardens hereby supports urging the State and Federal Government to recognize
Juneteenth as an official holiday.
Section 4: EFFECTIVE DATE: This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon
its final passage.
PASSED AND ADOPTED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI
GARDENS AT ITS REGULAR MEETING HELD ON JULY 8, 2020.
