HomeMy WebLinkAbout2021-138-3692_-_Supporting_Susan_G._Komen_Nonprofit_Organization_-_Adopted.docxRESOLUTION NO. 2021-138-3692 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA, ALLOCATING FUNDS FROM COUNCILWOMAN SHANNAN IGHODARO SPECIAL EVENTS ACCOUNT IN AN AMOUNT OF TWO THOUSAND FIVE HUNDERED DOLLARS ($2,500) TO SUPPORT SUSAN G. KOMEN NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION'S BREAST CANCER INITIATIVES; PROVIDING FOR THE ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE; PROVIDING FOR THE ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, among women in the United States, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death, and WHEREAS, In 2021, an estimated 281,550 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the U.S. as well as 49,290 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer, and WHEREAS, breast cancer has the highest mortality rate of any cancer in women between the ages of 20 and 59, and WHEREAS, African American women have a 31% breast cancer mortality rate which is highest of any U.S. racial or ethnic group, and WHEREAS, as one of the largest African American City Councilwoman Shannan Ighodaro encourages that the City does more to help women of color with breast cancer, and WHEREAS, the Susan G. Komen nonprofit organization addresses breast cancer on multiple fronts such as research, community health, global outreach and public policy initiatives in order to make the biggest impact against breast cancer, and WHEREAS, as the largest African American City in Florida, Miami Gardens can help change statistics in our community and ultimately save lives by meeting the most critical needs in our communities and investing in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer, and WHEREAS, the Susan G Komen Organization has made countless contributions throughout the City of Miami Gardens by providing residents with education and awareness outreach for many of years and free diagnostic screening, biopsies, mammograms, chemotherapy and financial assistance to uninsured Miami Gardens residents, and DocuSign Envelope ID: F44C527D-68D8-4A2E-B169-040501B3130B Page 2 of 3 Resolution No. 2021-138-3692 WHEREAS, Susan G Komen engages the community with events that promotes breast health education, advocacy and empowerment, including awarding annual grants supporting YWCA in Miami Gardens, partnerships with Miami Gardens churches (Mt. Zion AME, Mt. Hermon AME and Myrtle Grove Presbyterian) and Breast Cancer awareness events with former Vice Mayor Felicia Robinson at Miami Carol City Park, and WHEREAS, Councilwoman Ighodaro is requesting two thousand five hundred ($2,500) from her special events account to support the Susan G. Komen Nonprofit Organization’s Breast Cancer Initiatives, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA AS FOLLOWS: Section 1: ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS: The foregoing Whereas paragraphs are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true, and the same are hereby made a specific part of this Resolution. Section 2: AUTHORIZATION: The City Council of the City of Miami Gardens hereby allocate funds from Seat 3 Special Events Account for Two Thousand Five Hundred Dollars ($2,500) to support the Susan G. Komen Nonprofit Organization Breast Cancer Initiatives. Section 3: EFFECTIVE DATE: This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon its final passage.
