A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA, ALLOCATING FUNDS FROM
COUNCILMAN ROBERT STEPHENS' PUBLIC AFFAIRS
SPECIAL EVENTS ACCOUNT IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO
EXCEED FIVE HUNDERED DOLLARS ($500.00) IN SUPPORT
OF MIAMI NORLAND SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
PARTICIPATING IN THE 2022 FREEDOM WRITERS
SYMPOSIUM; PROVIDING FOR THE ADOPTION OF
REPRESENTATIONS; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, more than twenty years ago, millions of readers were introduced to
the Freedom Writers and teacher Erin Gruwell, and
WHEREAS, their stories was featured in the #1 New York Times bestseller The
Freedom Writers Diary, and
WHEREAS, for 20 years, the Freedom Writers Foundation has mitigated student
dropout rates by reproducing the Freedom Writers’ experience in schools around the
world, and
WHEREAS, the Foundation’s mission is to provide educators with tools to
empower all students to succeed, and
WHEREAS, their core programs include Training, Outreach, Scholarship, and
Curriculum. The Training Program includes a 5-day intensive workshop led by Erin
Gruwell that helps educators of all subjects and grade levels focus on the humanity of
every student, and
WHEREAS, current and graduate students of Miami Norland Senior High School
were selected to be featured in the new Freedom Writers book, Dear Freedom Writer,
and
WHEREAS, A total of seven (7) students will travel to Long Beach, California from
March 26th to March 29th to participate in the 2022 Freedom Writers official Book Launch
and Symposium, and
WHEREAS, Councilman Robert Stephens, III is requesting funding from the Public
Affairs Special Events Account in the amount of $500 to support the students of Miami
Norland Senior High School who will be traveling to participate in the 2022 Freedom
Writers official Book Launch and Symposium.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA AS FOLLOWS:

Section 1: ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS: The foregoing Whereas
paragraphs are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true, and the same are hereby
made a specific part of this Resolution.
Section 2: AUTHORIZATION: The City Council of the City of Miami Gardens
hereby authorizes the allocation of Five Hundred Dollars ($500.00) to Miami Norland
Senior High School to support the students participating in the 2022 Freedom Writers
Official Book Launch and Symposium.
Section 3: EFFECTIVE DATE: This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon
its final passage.
PASSED AND ADOPTED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI
GARDENS AT ITS REGULAR MEETING HELD ON MARCH 9, 2022.
