of the Mayor and Council Short Title: A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO TAKE ANY AND ALL STEPS NECESSARY TO DESIGNATE
THE BETTY T. FERGUSON RECREATIONAL COMPLEX AS A PARTICIPATING LOCATION FOR THE HEALTHWAYS SILVERSNEAKERS FITNESS PROGRAM; DIRECTING THE CITY MANAGER TO CONDUCT A MARKETING CAMPAIGN;
DIRECTING THE CITY MANAGER TO IDENTIFY AND ESTABLISH PARTNERSHIPS WITH OTHER MAJOR HEALTH INSURERS TO PROVIDE FITNESS TRAINING TO SENIOR CITIZENS; PROVIDING FOR THE ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS;
PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. Summary: HealthWays, a company dedicated to promoting health and well-being, administers the SilverSneakers Fitness program (“SilverSneakers”). SilverSneakers
is offered to senior citizens through leading healthcare plans and Medicare supplement carriers throughout the country. Currently, senior Floridians insured through Humana, CarePlus,
WellCare, SecureHorizons, AvMed, or Amerigroup health plans are eligible for the program. Under the SilverSneakers program, participants are given a complimentary membership to participating
fitness facilities and are offered educational seminars to promote a healthy lifestyle. Councilman Andre´ Williams recommends that the City designate the Betty T. Ferguson Recreational
Complex as a participating facility for the SilverSneakers program. Once the City Council approves the plan, ITEM J-2) CONSENT AGENDA RESOLUTION Silversneakers Fitness Progra
m1515 NW 167 Street, Building 5 Suite 200 Miami Gardens, Florida 33169 2 HealthWays will conduct an extensive interview process to ensure that the Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex
can provide the level of access, guidance and support expected by each member. If the Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex is chosen as a participating location, Healthways will reimburse
the City for basic gym membership fees for participants enrolled in approved health plans. Councilman Williams also recommends a marketing campaign to notify senior citizens of the SilverSneakers
program. Lastly, Councilman Williams recommends that the City identify and establish partnerships with other health plans to promote physical fitness among senior citizens. Recommended
Action: Councilman Andre´ Williams recommends that the City Council approve the attached Resolution authorizing the designation of the Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex as a location
for the Healthways SilverSneakers Fitness program. Attachment:
