Staff Summary: Background The City of Miami Gardens is host to two division 6A senior high schools, Miami Norland and Miami Carol City. Both schools have a long tradition of athletic success, especially in regard to their respective football programs. Because of the close proximity of the schools, when the varsity football teams play one another, the winning team is able to enjoy friendly “bragging rights” in the community. Current Situation The proposed resolution seeks to elevate the profile of this healthy in-city rivalry by creating a “Miami Gardens City Bowl”. The City Bowl trophy would be awarded to the winning school each year when these two programs face each other in a varsity football game. The winning school would be allowed to keep the trophy for the time period leading up to the next time the teams play one another, with the trophy going to the winner each time. ITEM J-5) CONSENT AGENDA RESOLUTION Miami Gardens City Bowl 1515 NW 167 Street, Building 5 Suite 200 Miami Gardens, Florida 33169 The athletic directors for each of the schools have been contacted and are fully supportive of this resolution. The timing for adoption of this resolution is critical, as there is an upcoming game scheduled on Thursday, October 14, 2010. The City Bowl trophy will be manufactured and will be paid for using the sponsor’s discretionary fund. Proposed Action That the City Council approve the resolution creating the Miami Gardens City Bowl, which includes the trophy going to the winner of the Miami Carol City High School vs. Miami Norland High School varsity football game each year that the two programs play each other.
