A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA, PARTNERING WITH NICKLAUS
CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL IN COMBATING SUDDEN CARDIAC
ARREST (SCA) IN YOUNG ATHLETES IN MIAMI GARDENS;
GRANTING NICKLAUS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL’S HEART
INSTITUTE ACCESS TO HOST A SERIES OF FREE EKG
SCREENINGS, CPR TRAININGS AND EDUCATIONAL
AWARENESS WORKSHOPS AT PARK FACILITIES
THROUGHOUT THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS; AUTHORIZING
THE CITY MANAGER TO TAKE ANY AND ALL STEPS
NECESSARY TO IMPLEMENT THE INTENT AND PURPOSE OF
THIS RESOLUTION; PROVIDING FOR THE ADOPTION OF
REPRESENTATIONS; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, congenital heart disorders occur in approximately eight out of every
1,000 newborns and the leading cause of death among young athletes, with minimal
advanced signs or symptoms, is sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), and
WHEREAS, Nicklaus Children's Hospital has continued to build on a tradition of
leadership and excellence in children's cardiology by becoming the first facility in Florida
to perform pediatric open-heart surgery, and
WHEREAS, Nicklaus Children's Hospital’s Heart Institute is hosting free EKG
screening and CPR training events throughout the community at parks, schools, and
sports facilities to young athletes ages 5 to 21, and
WHEREAS, a partnership, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital’s Heart Institute will be
able to properly educate and supply the Miami Gardens community with effective
healthcare resources, such as linkage to vital preventive pediatric cardiac, and
WHEREAS, Councilman Robert Stephens, III is requesting the City partner with
Nicklaus Children’s Hospital to host a series of free EKG screenings, CPR trainings and
educational awareness workshops at park facilities throughout the City of Miami Gardens,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1: ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS: The foregoing Whereas
paragraphs are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true, and the same are hereby
made a specific part of this Resolution.
Section 2: AUTHORIZATION: The City Council of the City of Miami Gardens
hereby authorizes the City to partner with Nicklaus Children’s Hospital to host a series of

free EKG screenings, CPR trainings and educational awareness workshops at park
facilities in the City of Miami Gardens.
Section 3: EFFECTIVE DATE: This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon
its final passage.

GARDENS AT ITS REGULAR MEETING HELD ON FEBRUARY 8, 2023.
