OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER AND THE CITY CLERK TO EXECUTE AND ATTEST, RESPECTIVELY, THAT CERTAIN CONTRACT NO. 926-594 WITH
THE CHILDREN’S TRUST IN THE AMOUNT OF $75,000.00 IN SUPPORT OF THE PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT’S TEEN LEADERSHIP ACADEMY PROGRAM FOR 2009 – 2010, A COPY OF WHICH IS ATTACHED HERETO
AS EXHIBIT “A;” PROVIDING FOR INSTRUCTIONS TO THE CITY CLERK; PROVIDING FOR THE ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS; PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE Staff Summary: The City of Miami Gardens has
a large number of teens who would like to give back to their community as well as broaden their life skills. In March 2006, the Parks and Recreation Department implemented programming
geared towards the teenage population in our community by hiring a full‐time Teen Coordinator to develop, research funding opportunities, implement, and monitor programs. In our signature
Teen Leadership Academy program participants meet weekly, enjoy field trips, special guests, tutoring, and socializing. To further this mission, the department applied for and received
funding in the amount of $75,000 in FY 08‐09 from The Children’s Trust to expand the teen program. This will be combined with $65,939.03 in departmental in‐ITEM J-10) CONSENT AGENDA

1515 NW 167 Street, Building 5 Suite 200 Miami Gardens, Florida 33169 kind contributions. The Academy program is delivered after school daily highlighting dedicated career‐based learning
tracks. These tracks include Government, Sports and Entertainment, Environment and Science, and Health. The program is multi‐pronged, covering needed life skills such as substance abuse
prevention and financial literacy while allowing participants to explore and engage in a variety of career fields through field trips, hands on experience and structured learning. The
aim is to broaden participants’ often narrow perceptions of accessible current and future success opportunities. The primary outcomes that are addressed by the program are improved capacity
for economic self‐sufficiency, by improving the participants’ financial literacy knowledge and skills. The inaugural year of the funded program was a success, and The Children’s Trust
has allocated $75,000 for the 2009‐10 school year to ensure the continuation of the teen program. Recommendation: It is recommended that the City Council approve and allow the City Manager
to execute a contract with The Children’s Trust in the amount of $75,000 in support of Parks and Recreation’s teen program. Attachment: Attachment A –The Children’s Trust contract No.
