FAIR FOR ELEMENTARY‐AGED STUDENTS RESIDING IN THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS; PROVIDING FOR THE ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS; PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. Staff Summary: Background A significant
amount of published journals and articles reflect the widening gap that exists between the U.S. and other countries in the arena of science and engineering as it pertains to students
in grades K‐12. Moreover, it is well understood that by the time students in the U.S. reach high school, their interest in science and engineering is greatly diminished as a consequence
of a lack of exposure and lack of resources. The lack of exposure to these fields is exponentially profound in predominantly minority communities like the City of Miami Gardens. Current
Situation ITEM K-9) CONSENT AGENDA RESOLUTION Creating the Miami Gardens Science and Engineering Fair
1515 NW 167 Street, Building 5 Suite 200 Miami Gardens, Florida 33169 In an effort to cultivate increased exposure and interest in the fields of science and engineering, the attached
resolution proposes that the City of Miami Gardens launch a Science and Engineering Fair to be carried out in partnership with all of the public elementary schools within the City’s
limits. The Fair would take place at an agreed upon time during the academic school year at the various schools, culminating in an exposition to be held at a site yet to be determined.
Monetary awards would be provided to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners, along with a monetary award for the elementary school with the highest level of participation. The sponsor of
this resolution has identified private funding sources that will be used to provide the awards to both students and the winning school. The winners of the Science and Engineering Fair
would be determined by a committee comprised of science and engineering professionals, along with select select members of the academic community. The proposed resolution seeks to cultivate
an interest in these fields and to begin to groom the next generation of research scientists, and engineers. Proposed Action: That the City Council adopts the attached Resolution. Attachment:
