A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA, APPROVING THE HEALTHY
RETAIL INCENTIVE PROGRAM; PROVIDING FOR THE
ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS; PROVIDING FOR AN
EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, Live Healthy Miami Gardens (LHMG) is an initiative spearheaded by
the City of Miami Gardens that began in February 2014, and
WHEREAS, in December 2020, the City of Miami Gardens City Council approved
the Miami Gardens Healthy Corner Stores Certification Program, supporting the long-
term sustainability of the project and allowing better recognition for small retailers who
meet a series of established healthy product standards, and
WHEREAS, the next step for the project, LHMG have identified opportunities to
expand this work to larger retailers, such as supermarkets through a Healthy Checkout
Incentive Program, and
WHEREAS, the program objective is to combat product placement around
checkout lanes and cash registers which encourages purchase habits that exacerbate
dietary health conditions such as Diabetes, promotes unhealthy snacking, and is often
marketed to parents and children, and
WHEREAS, the goal of the program is to support retailers in achieving the
standards outlined by the program and thereby earning a certification status,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1: ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS: The foregoing Whereas
paragraphs are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true, and the same are hereby
made a specific part of this Resolution.
Section 2: AUTHORIZATION: The City Council of the City of Miami Gardens
hereby approves the Healthy Retail Incentive Program.
Section 3: EFFECTIVE DATE: This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon
its final passage.

GARDENS AT ITS REGULAR MEETING HELD ON SEPTEMBER 13, 2023.
