A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING SEPTEMBER AS
SICKLE CELL AWARENESS MONTH AND REQUESTING THAT
SEPTEMBER BE RECOGNIZED AS SICKLE CELL
AWARENESS MONTH IN THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS;
PROVIDING FOR THE ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS;
PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder that causes a
protein in the blood, called hemoglobin, to be misshapen, and
WHEREAS, Sickle cell disease affects approximately 100,000 Americans, many
of whom are African American, and more than 20 million people worldwide,
WHEREAS, Councilwoman Shannan "Lady" Ighodaro is recommending the Mayor
and City Council recognize September as Sickle Cell Awareness Month,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1: ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS: The foregoing Whereas
paragraphs are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true, and the same are hereby
made a specific part of this Resolution.
Section 2: AUTHORIZATION: The City Council of the City of Miami Gardens
hereby supports September as Sickle Cell Awareness Month and recognizes September
as Sickle Cell Awareness Month in the City of Miami Gardens.
Section 3: EFFECTIVE DATE: This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon
its final passage.
PASSED AND ADOPTED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI
GARDENS AT ITS REGULAR MEETING HELD ON SEPTEMBER 13, 2023.
