A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA, ALLOCATING FUNDS FROM
COUNCILMAN STEPHENS’ SPECIAL EVENTS/ PUBLIC
AFFAIRS ACCOUNT IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED SEVEN
THOUSAND DOLLARS ($7,000) IN SUPPORT OF THE
NATIONAL AUTHOR’S DAY READ-IN AND NIGHT OF
CELEBRATION; PROVIDING FOR THE ADOPTION OF
REPRESENTATIONS; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, on November 1, millions of people celebrate authors and the books
they write on National Author's Day, and
WHEREAS, in 1928, Nellie Verne Burt McPherson, president of the Bement Illinois
Women’s Club, had an idea of setting aside a day to celebrate American authors, and
WHEREAS, the United States Department of Commerce recognized this day in
1949 with the idea to recognize and celebrate all of the people who have contributed to
American literature, and
WHEREAS, across the country, people take time to celebrate by reading their
favorite books, purchasing books by their favorite authors, or sharing their favorite novels
online, and
WHEREAS, Councilman Robert Stephens will honor and celebrate local authors
on National Author’s Day with literary achievement awards, a read-in experience, and
entertainment for the community to enjoy, and
WHEREAS, Councilman Stephens is requesting funds from his Special Events/
Public Affairs account in the amount of $7,000 to support the National Author’s Day Read-
In and Night of Celebration.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1: ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS: The foregoing Whereas
paragraphs are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true, and the same are hereby
made a specific part of this Resolution.
Section 2: AUTHORIZATION: The City Council of the City of Miami Gardens
hereby authorizes the allocation of Seven Thousand Dollars ($7,000.00) from the Seat 6
Special Events/Public Affairs Account to support the National Author’s Day Read-In and
Night of Celebration.

Section 3: EFFECTIVE DATE: This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon
its final passage.
PASSED AND ADOPTED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS
AT ITS REGULAR MEETING HELD ON OCTOBER 25, 2023.
