A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA, RENAMING NW 156TH STREET,
BETWEEN NW 42ND AVENUE AND NW 47TH AVENUE AS
“OMEGA PSI PHI WAY”; AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER
TO CHANGE THE STREET SIGNAGE; PROVIDING FOR THE
ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS; PROVIDING FOR AN
EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, The Sigma Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., will be
celebrating its 85th Chapter Anniversary. The brothers of The Sigma Alpha Chapter have
continuously demonstrated their dedication to the community through various programs,
scholarships and social action initiatives throughout The City of Miami Gardens, assisting
its residents. These initiatives include Community Food Distributions & Blood Drives, Mile
Cleanups, Keeping it Clean Quarterly Cleanups, Real Men Read, MLK Day of Service,
Fred’s Closet: Anti-Gun Violence Awareness, Annual Trayvon Martin Peace Walk, Voter
Registration Drives, Sickle Cell Awareness Walks, Domestic Violence Awareness
Seminars, Human Trafficking Seminars, Miami Gardens Community Health and
Resource Fair, COVID-19 Prevention Initiatives, Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaways, and
Back to School Drives, and
WHEREAS, Section 34-233 of the City of Miami Gardens Code of Ordinance
outlines the process for renaming and codesignating streets. In addition, section 44-
233(b)(10) provides the Mayor and members of the City Council may sponsor a
Resolution for the renaming or codesignation of a street, and
WHEREAS, Councilman Reggie Leon aims to commemorate the fraternity’s
cardinal principals of manhood, scholarship and perseverance, as exemplified by the
Sigma Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc’s contributions to Miami Gardens.
Councilman Leon seeks to honor the fraternity’s rich history and legacy by officially
recognizing and dedicating NW 156th Street between NW 42nd Avenue and 47th Avenue
as Omega Psi Phi Way and directing the City Manager to take all steps necessary to
change the street signage on NW 156th Street for this purpose, and
WHEREAS, In celebration of the Sigma Alpha Chapter’s 85 years of service and
commitment to the community Councilman Reggie Leonis requesting the support of the
above-named item.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1: ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS: The foregoing Whereas
paragraphs are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true, and the same are hereby
made a specific part of this Resolution.

Section 2: AUTHORIZATION: The City Council of the City of Miami Gardens
hereby authorizes the renaming of NW 156th Street, between NW 42nd Avenue and NW
47th Avenue as Omega Psi Phi Way and directing the City Manager to take all steps
necessary to change the street signage on NW 156th Street for this purpose.
Section 3: EFFECTIVE DATE: This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon
its final passage.

AT ITS REGULAR MEETING HELD ON FEBRUARY 28, 2024.
