Staff Summary: The Miami Gardens Police Department is progressive and innovative in the use of equipment and tactics employed while conducting law enforcement operations. Due to the current proliferation of high powered weapons it has recently been determined through actual scenarios and collaboration with other agencies that while searching for violent offenders, MGPD personnel should be more safely equipped through the use of a higher threat level body armor provided to Canine and Tactical officers. The Department currently issues a specific level of body armor for routine use and as a step to be more tactical in the deployment of specialty personnel. The Department will purchase ten tactical ballistic vests at a higher threat level for use during searches and other potentially volatile situations. The disclosure of the actual threat level is being withheld due to safety considerations. ITEM K-1) CONSENT AGENDA RESOLUTION Purchase of Ballistic Vests 1515 NW 167 Street, Building 5 Suite 200 Miami Gardens, Florida 33169 The cost of each vest is $2,400; total costs $24,000, and will be purchased utilizing Law Enforcement Trust Fund dollars from. The total expenditure will be made from the LETF, however one half of the costs will be reimbursed to the City through the Department of Justice Bulletproof Vests Grant which has been allocated to the Department. The purchase of this equipment will enhance the level of safety provided to our officers who must respond to a variety of tactical situations. The purchase of this equipment is authorized under Florida Statutes regulating the use of LETF dollars and the amount of the purchase is within the City Manager’s authority. Proposed Action: That the City Council authorize the City Manager to expend $24,000 from the Police Department’s LETF account, of which one half will be reimbursed, to purchase 10 tactical ballistic vests.
