HomeMy WebLinkAbout09.22.2016 City Council MinutesCITY COUNCIL MINUTES -OCTOBER 22, 12014 CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS REGULAR CITY COUNCIL MINUTES OCTOBER 22, 2014 (A) CALL TO ORDER/ROLL CALL The City Council for the City of Miami Gardens, Florida, met in regular session, Wednesday, October 22, 2014, beginning at 7:00 p.m., in the City Council Chambers, 18605 NW 27 h Avenue, Miami Gardens, Florida. The following members of the City Council were present: Mayor Oliver Gilbert, Vice Mayor Felicia Robinson and Council members: Lisa C. Davis, Rodney Harris, Lillie Q. Odom, David Williams and Erhabor Ighodaro. Also in attendance were: City Manager Cameron Benson, City Attorney Sonja K. Dickens and City Clerk Ronetta Taylor. (B) INVOCATION Mayor Gilbert delivered the Invocation. A moment of silence was observed on the passing of Mr. Billy Isley. (C) PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE Recited in unison (D) APPROVAL OF MINUTES Regular City Council Minutes — October 8, 2014 Motion offered by Councilman Williams, seconded by Councilman Harris to approve the minutes, with the necessary corrections, if any. This motion passed and carried by a unanimous voice vote of the Council. (E) ORDER OF BUSINESS (Items to be pulled from Consent Agenda at this time) Item K-3 was pulled from the Consent Agenda by Vice Mayor Robinson Item L-1 was removed from the official agenda by the City Manager Item I-1 was moved to the next City Council meeting Motion offered by Councilman Ighodaro, seconded by Councilwoman Davis to adopt the official agenda, with the amendments/deletions. There being no further discussion, the motion to adopt the official agenda passed and carried by a unanimous voice vote. Regular City Council Minutes October 22, 2014 Page 1 CITY COUNCIL MINUTES -OCTOBER 22, 12014 (F) SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS (5 minutes each) F-1) Cameron Benson, City Manager— Greater Miami Chambers of Commerce and Small Business Administration Ula Zucker Williams, Executive Director of the Greater Miami Gardens Chamber of Commerce appeared before the City Council to make the community aware of a partnership being initiated with the US Small Business Administration. Althea Harold, a representative from the US Small Business Administration appeared before the City Council and stated it is the Administration's plan to work with the Greater Miami Gardens Chamber of Commerce to bring an educational component to the City of Miami Gardens. This initiative would help the businesses located in the City to grow F-2) Vice Mayor Felicia Robinson — Breast Cancer Awareness Month Vice Mayor Robinson recognized the founder of "I Can Fitness". This organization, which is actually a boot camp participated during the Pink Walk event. I Can Fitness donated $400.00 to The Women's Breast Health Initiative to assist with their breast cancer awareness outreach. (G) PUBLIC COMMENTS Dorothy Smith, 20484 NW 14th Place, Miami Gardens, Florida, appeared before the City Council and stated at the old city hall site, a "Citizen Rights Wall" was erected. She asked that the Citizen Right Wall be erected at this new facility, as well. She further asked that the City Council meetings be televised. JoAnn Harris, 3000 NW 199`h Street, Miami Gardens, Florida, appeared before the City Council to thank Councilman Ighodaro for supporting the Alliance For Musical Arts. Kevin Brown, 3115 NW 157th Street, Miami Gardens, Florida, appeared before the City Council to bring to the Council's attention that the Miami Gardens Bulldogs was honored by the Orange Bowl Youth Football Alliance. He thanked Mayor Gilbert for his continued support, as well as Councilmen Harris and Ighodaro for their participation. Carolyn Lordens, 2400 South Dixie Highway, Miami, Florida, appeared before the City Council representing Safe Outlet, Inc., and its Domestic Violence initiative. Motion offered by Mayor Gilbert, seconded by Councilman Harris to place Item K-3 back on the Consent Agenda because Vice Mayor Robinson's question has been answered. There being no discussion, the motion passed and carried by a unanimous vote of the members present. (Q) REPORTS OF MAYOR AND COUNCIL MEMBERS Councilman Williams shared that he had the opportunity to speak with a couple of business leaders as it related to the Science and Engineering initiative, as well as other Miami Gardens related issues. He further shared that he was invited to speak at an event sponsored by the Audubon Society, which was a great experience. He said that people throughout the state and nationally as well were excited about what the City of Miami Gardens is doing. He encouraged the Council members to make their appointment to the Gardening and Fishing Club; if the Council member cannot identify anyone to serve to contact the City Clerk because a pool list has been established. He shared a support letter he received from Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science. This letter is made a part of the record, as attachment "A". Councilman Harris shared that on November 6, 2014, a Town Hall Meeting is scheduled to be held at First Baptist Church of Bunche Park. This meeting will center around issues that were brought up at the Town Hall meeting held in August 2014. Mayor Gilbert announced that there are two early voting sites in Miami Gardens, the Betty T. Ferguson Center and the North Dade Regional Library. He asked that everyone ask their family and friends to vote. He said if you care about the decisions that are being made, you need to vote.
