HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017-139-3244 - Safe Exchange ZoneRESOLUTION NO. 2017-139-3244 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING THE DESIGNATION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS POLICE DEPARTMENT AS A SAFE EXCHANGE ZONE; PROVIDING FOR THE ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS: PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, City Staff recommends designating the City of Miami Gardens Police Department (CMGPD) as a Safe Exchange Zone, and WHEREAS, CMGPD will serve as a location to conduct business where citizens can feel safe knowing there is video monitoring of the transaction, and WHEREAS, the Safe Exchange Zone will be under twenty-four (24) hour video surveillance, and WHEREAS, there will be two parallel parking spaces with posted signs specifically for the Program in front of police headquarters, and WHEREAS, a one-time purchase of two signs, at a total cost of Seventy Dollars ($70.00), is needed for this Program, there are no other costs associated with this Program, and WHEREAS, Staff recommends the City Council of the City of Miami Gardens authorize the designation of the City of Miami Gardens Police Department as a Safe Exchange Zone, and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA AS FOLLOWS: Section 1: ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS: The foregoing Whereas paragraphs are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true, and the same are hereby made a specific part of this Resolution. Section 2: AUTHORIZATION: The City Council of the City of Miami Gardens hereby authorizes the designation of the City of Miami Gardens Police Department as a Safe Exchange Zone. Section 3: EFFECTIVE DATE: This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon its final passage. Benson, City Manager Department: Police Department Short Title: A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING THE DESIGNATION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS POLICE DEPARTMENT AS A SAFE EXCHANGE ZONE; PROVIDING FOR THE ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. Staff Summary: The goal of the program is to significantly reduce crimes in the City of Miami Gardens directly or indirectly related to the sale and trade of goods listed on the internet. There will be two parallel parking spaces with posted signs specifically for the program in front of police headquarters. The Safe Exchange Zone will be under 24 hour surveillance through the cameras mounted on the Public Safety. During the evening and night time hours, the area is well-lit to allow transactions at all hours. The City of Miami Gardens and the Miami Gardens Police Department is not responsible for liability arising out of property transactions. AGENDA ITEM K-6 DESIGNATING CMPD AS SAFE EXCHANGE ZONE 18605 NW 27th Avenue Miami Gardens, Florida 33056 The City and Police Department will simply be providing a location to conduct business where citizens can feel safe knowing there is video recording of the transaction. The program will be at no cost to the Police Department; however, there will be the need to make a one-time purchase of two signs at a total cost of $70.00. The signs will be installed by Public Works. Proposed Action: That the City Council approves the attached resolution authorizing the City Manager to execute the Safe Exchange Zone Program.
