HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019-172-3301 MDCPS Not to Implement School Guardian Program RESOLUTION NO. 2019-172-3301 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA URGING THE MIAMI-DADE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD NOT TO IMPLEMENT THE SCHOOL GUARDIAN PROGRAM WHICH PERMITS CLASSROOM TEACHERS TO BE ARMED; PROVIDING FOR THE ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, on March 9, 2019 Governor Rick Scott signed SB 7026, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act which, among several other provisions, established the School Guardian Program which permitted non-teaching volunteers to train to act as armed campus monitors to supplement or in some cases take the place of law enforcement personnel, and WHEREAS, on May 8, 2019, Governor Ron DeSantis signed SB 7030, School Safety and Security, which, among several other provisions, removed the prohibition against individuals employed solely as classroom teachers from volunteering to serve as guardians, thus permitting teachers to be armed, and WHEREAS, Councilman Reggie Leon would like for the City Council to urge the Miami-Dade County School Board to not implement the Guardian Program, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA AS FOLLOWS: Section 1: ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS: The foregoing Whereas paragraphs are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true, and the same are hereby made a specific part of this Resolution. Section 2: AUTHORIZATION: The City Council of the City of Miami Gardens hereby urges the Miami-Dade County School Board not to implement the School Guardian Program which permits classroom teachers to be armed. Section 3: EFFECTIVE DATE: This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon its final passage.
