HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019-187-3316 Resolution of Support Bahamas RESOLUTION NO. 2019-187-3316 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA, EXPRESSING SYMPATHY AND SUPPORT FOR THE PEOPLE OF THE BAHAMAS AND THEIR GOVERNMENT AS THEY BEGIN REBUILDING; PROVIDING FOR THE ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, on Sunday, September 1st, Hurricane Dorian struck the northern Bahamas as a Category 5 hurricane and stalled over the Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama Island for two days, and WHEREAS, torrential rains, destructive winds and relentless flooding likely damaged tens of thousands of homes and destroyed a large amount of infrastructure on the islands, and WHEREAS, that Grand Bahama Island is approximately 120 miles from Northeast Miami-Dade County, and WHEREAS, the devastation that the area has experienced will have a direct impact on the South Florida Economy and the City of Miami Gardens, and WHEREAS, according to the New York Times, aid experts believe the island will soon begin the long, arduous process of rebuilding and immediate emergency supplies are needed, and WHEREAS, the health and welfare of the residents of the Bahamas is an utmost public concern, and WHEREAS the City of Miami Gardens expresses sympathy and support for the people of Bahamas and their government as they begin rebuilding, and WHEREAS, the City encourages its residents to support efforts to provide supplies and relief to those directly impacted, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA AS FOLLOWS: Resolution No. 2019-187-3316 Section 1: ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS: The foregoing Whereas paragraphs are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true, and the same are hereby made a specific part of this Resolution. Section 2: EXPRESSION OF SUPPORT: The City Council of the City of Miami Gardens hereby expresses its support for the people of the Bahamas and their Government as they begin to rebuild. Section 3: EFFECTIVE DATE: This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon its final passage.
