HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019-241-3370 Policy on Naming or Renaming of Significant City Structures RESOLUTION NO. 2019-241-3370 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA, ESTABLISHING A POLICY FOR THE NAMING OR RENAMING OF SIGNIFICANT CITY STRUCTURES; PROVIDING FOR THE ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, the City owns structures throughout the City, and WHEREAS, the City Council previously established a naming rights policy in accordance with Resolution 2015-07-204, relating to naming rights that are attendant to sponsorships, and WHEREAS, the City Council also has established a policy on the naming/renaming of City streets in Section 34-233 of the Code of Ordinances, and WHEREAS, the City Council deems it appropriate to establish a naming policy for significant structures not referenced in the aforementioned policies, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA AS FOLLOWS: Section 1 : ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS: The foregoing Whereas paragraphs are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true, and the same are hereby made a specific part of this Resolution. Section 2: ESTABLISHMENT OF POLICY: The City Council of the City of Miami Gardens hereby establishes the following policy with respect to the naming/renaming of significant structures in the City not referenced in Resolution 2015- 07-204 or Section 34-233 of the code of Ordinances: a. Only Mayor or Members of the City Council may sponsor proposals to name or rename structures; b. Persons or entities whose names are considered for naming/renaming of structures shall have a proven record of service and commitment to the City of Miami Gardens and its residents, or must have made significant contributions to the United States. C. The City Council shall approve the naming/renaming of structures in the City by a majority vote of the City Council. d. Once the City Council has adopted a resolution to name/rename a structure, the City Manager shall take all steps to erect the appropriate signage on the structure. e. The City Council reserves the right to waive the requirements of this resolution upon good cause shown. EFFECTIVE DATE: This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon its final passage.
