HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019-269-3398 Naming Bunche Park PlaygroundRESOLUTION NO. 2019-269-3398 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA, NAMING THE PLAYGROUND WITHIN BUNCHE PARK LOCATED AT 15600 W. BUNCHE PARK DRIVE, MIAMI GARDENS, FL, AS THE "JO ANN E. ROLLE PLAYGROUND"; PROVIDING FOR INSTRUCTIONS TO THE CITY MANAGER; PROVIDING FOR THE ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, Previous to the incorporation of the City of Miami Gardens in 2003, there were many extra-ordinary citizens in the area who were outspoken community activists and the late, Mrs. Jo Ann E. Rolle was one of them, and WHEREAS, her family was originally from the Bahamas; she was born and raised in Hallandale Beach, Florida; and WHEREAS, In 1950, they moved to the Bunche Park Neighborhood within\, Miami-Dade County, Florida; an area known for Black World War II Veterans, and WHEREAS, Mrs. Jo Ann E. Rolle also grew-up in the era of the American Civil Rights movement and segregation; and WHEREAS, among other things, it was the time of social unrest and decades of the long struggle for the fair enforcement of constitutional rights for women and African Americans; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Rolle canvassed passionately against the proposed construction of apartments that would have replaced the former Bunche Park shopping plaza in the neighborhood; and WHEREAS, instead, she lobbied for the construction of a recreational playground for the children; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Rolle's fearlessness and determination influenced the development of Bunche Park located at 15600 Bunche Park Drive, Miami Gardens, Florida; and WHEREAS, she made a difference in the community that has been beneficial to many generations; and WHEREAS, Councilwoman Lillie Q. Odom requests the City Council recognizes the dedication of the late Mrs. Jo Ann Rolle; the longtime-resident who personally campaigned against a property developer for the benefit of families, in a time when people of color were denied many privileges and civil liberties by naming the playground within Bunche Park as the "Jo Ann E. Rolle Playground." NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA AS FOLLOWS: Section 1: ADOPTION OF REPRESENTATIONS: The foregoing whereas paragraphs are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true, and the same are hereby made a specific part of this Resolution. Section 2: PLAYGROUND NAMING: The City Council of the City of Miami Gardens hereby officially dedicates and names the playground within Bunche Park located at 15600 W. Bunche Park Drive as the "Jo Ann E. Rolle Playground." Section 2: INSTRUCTIONS TO THE CITY MANAGER: The City Manager is hereby directed to take any and all steps necessary for the marking and signage on the Page 2 of 3 Resolution No. 2019-269-3398 playground as well as plan a formal dedication, dedicating the playground to honor Mrs. Jo Ann Rolle. Section 3: EFFECTIVE DATE: This Resolution shall take effect immediately upon its final passage.
